About Hair Extensions – From Real Experience
Since there is a lot of outdated and even incorrect information about hair extensions on the internet, I would like to share how things actually work based on my own professional experience.
Of course, no advice can apply to every client, because everyone’s hair is different. What works perfectly for one person may not be the best solution for another.
And many hairdressers may not agree with my views… but as the saying goes, as many hairdressers as there are, there are also many different opinions.
Facts and Myths
Myth: Conditioner Should Not Be Used Before Installation
Arrive with freshly washed hair.
When washing your hair, be sure to use conditioner or a hair mask – otherwise the installation can be quite difficult. Hair tends to become tangled, harder to comb, and worst of all… full of static. 😄
It is best to let your hair air-dry naturally after washing or use a hair dryer. However, avoid straightening, curling, or applying a lot of styling products before the installation.
This helps the hairdresser see how your natural hair behaves, making it easier to create the most comfortable and natural-looking result that blends seamlessly with your own hair.
Myth: Conditioner Should Not Be Applied to the Bonds
Conditioner does not harm the extension bonds.
Modern hair extension bonds are very strong. They do not loosen, soften, or slide out because of conditioner.
Myth: Hair Should Not Be Colored Right Before Installation
You do not need to wait after coloring your hair before installing extensions.
Hair extensions can be installed immediately after coloring, and this will not cause any problems.
Myth: Hair Should Not Be Washed or Colored Immediately After Installation
This is not true.
Modern keratin bonds are very strong, and if the extensions are installed correctly, there is no problem washing your hair even immediately after the installation.
For tape extensions, it is recommended to wait about 24 hours before washing.
For weft extensions, washing the hair right after installation does not affect the attachments at all.
Myth: Hair Extensions Must Be Washed at Least Once a Week
Wash your hair extensions as needed, just like you would your natural hair.
If hair is allowed to become excessively greasy or if shampoos that do not clean properly are used, it may eventually cause problems.
Before washing, it is recommended to brush or comb the hair thoroughly.
Myth: Special Products Must Be Used for Hair Extensions
Hair extensions do not require special shampoos, conditioners, or other hair care products.
The right shampoo should be chosen according to your scalp type, while conditioner or hair masks should be selected based on your hair type and needs.
Myth: Hair Extension Bonds Cannot Withstand the Sauna
On the contrary, you can apply a hair mask before going to the sauna, allowing the heat to help the product absorb better into the hair.
Myth: Styling Products Should Not Be Applied Near Hair Extension Bonds
They can be applied without any problem.
Using styling products on or near the extension bonds will not cause any damage.
Myth: It Is Normal for Extension Strands to Slip Out Between Maintenance Appointments
This is not normal.
The strands should stay securely in place from one maintenance appointment to the next.
It is normal for a few hairs to come out while brushing, as this is part of the natural hair shedding process. However, a large number of hairs or strands should not be coming out.
Almost a Myth: Hair Extensions Must Be Tied Up for the Night
This is not mandatory, and nothing bad will happen if you sleep with your hair loose.
However, hair extensions tend to last longer if you tie your hair into a loose braid for the night.
Do not go to bed with wet hair.
This is actually true. While it does not directly damage the hair, you may wake up to an unpleasant surprise if your hair dries overnight in awkward bends or tangles, meaning you may have to wash and style it again.
Myth: Hair Extensions Do Not Cause Damage
Most clients want to know whether hair extensions can damage their natural hair.
The answer is yes — they can, but with the right installation and proper maintenance, the damage is minimal.
It is important to choose the extension method that suits your hair type, and the maintenance intervals should not be too long.
Almost a Myth: One Hair Extension Method Damages Hair Less Than Another
Regardless of the attachment method used for permanent extensions, the difference in potential damage is generally minimal.
The main factors that can affect your natural hair are the additional weight on the hair roots and incorrect installation or maintenance techniques.
An exception can be sewn-in weft extensions, which are often considered gentler than many other methods.
Almost a Myth: Clip-In Extensions Do Not Damage Your Natural Hair
Clip-in extensions can cause damage if they are worn every day.
If used occasionally, they are generally less harmful. However, daily wear may lead to bald spots or thinning areas where the clips are attached.
In such cases, it may be better to consider permanent hair extensions for everyday use, or choose halo extensions, which are often a gentler alternative.
Almost a Myth: Clip-In Extensions Can Be Converted Into Permanent Extensions
Clip-in extensions can be converted into permanent extensions, but they may not always be suitable for everyday wear.
If clip-in extensions are not made from high-quality hair, they may become tangled over time and eventually need to be replaced with a new set.
However, clip-in extensions purchased from us are made from high-quality Slavic hair, which means they can be safely converted into permanent extensions if desired.
Myth: Hair Extensions Cannot Be Installed on Short Hair
In most cases, they can.
